TV SALES SOAR AS THE THREE LIONS ROAR

[LONDON, Tuesday 1st June 2010] – It's all to play for, with television retailers competing for their share of the soaring estimated 800,000 plus TV sales which are expected between May 1st and June 11th, according to Retail Decisions (ReD), the world leader in payment fraud prevention. The forthcoming World Cup is creating a boom in sales of the latest TV’s with stay at home football fans.

Carl Clump, ReD CEO comments “Our prediction is that TV sales will soar by 28% between May 1st and June 11th this year, compared with the same period in 2009. Retailers could stand to net more than £400 million, as a result.”

TV sales are being boosted by strong advertising campaigns from manufactures and retailers in the run up to of the world cup. Current incentives for buying a new TV include trade-in deals, money-off offers, opportunities to get the full value of the TV back if England wins, or money back for every goal that England scores.

Retailers are scoring the most goals with sales of the Sony Bravia range, closely followed by Panasonic Vieras. Certain models in these ranges come with features that smooth out the fast-moving images from a football match into a sharp, high-resolution picture. They also incorporate better colour contrast and surround sound features. Samsung, Toshiba and Linsar TVs follow in the ranking. The average amount spent on a TV is just over £500.

Carl further comments “Sophisticated features also make these TVs a lucrative target for criminals attempting to make fraudulent purchases. On average, a TV fraudulently purchased will cost around £560 – just a little more than the average spent on a genuine transaction for a TV.”

The TV brand currently topping the charts for fraudsters is Samsung, with models costing in the region of £450 being the leaders. Panasonic Vieras priced in the same range come next.
